" Vintage Railroad Nail Cufflinks - Raised Square Head "
Item # VNH6
$ 95.00
For about 40 years American railroad companies used custom manufactured
nails as a way to determine what year the tie or section of track was laid.
Not to be confused with railroad spikes which are much larger, railroad
nails were custom made and used for identification purposes only.
The number on the face corresponds to the year the nail was cast, in this case
1936. It wasn't until 1899 railroads began to use date nails and
it's use peaked in the 1930's when WWII, the Great Depression and better tie
stamping methods became more cost effective than making nails.
Railroad nail cufflinks are one piece, individually milled using only the
nail. No other parts are used. The point has been sheared off,
but the unique
features of the nail remain intact. Recovered from decades of service,
each nail head leaves behind the distinct hallmark of being struck with a
sledgehammer!
Please note that while each pair matches, no particular dates are available.
Pairs date from the 1920's and 1930's. Nail heads measure approximately

" Prehistoric Insect Amber Cufflinks " Item # CLSP40
$ 225.00
Baltic amber is the fossilized resin of sap from extinct prehistoric coniferous
pine trees which
formed a huge forest 40 - 60
million years ago at the present location of the
Baltic Sea. Occasionally insects would become trapped
in the sap, and become preserved forever as the sap fossilized. It's
amazing that these little insects are so old...
40 - 60 million years to be exact! Discovering amber embedded with insects
is a challenge. Rarely does
one surface, and when it does it's usually darker amber or an unusable shape for
cufflinks. But every so often
one will surface that's a beautiful transparent honey color, perfect for a truly
unique pair of cufflinks!
Amber cufflinks measure approximately 5/8" and are set in solid
sterling silver.
