No mass is lost, no feature is distorted. Instead the coins become thicker

For about 40 years American railroad companies used custom manufactured
nails as a way to determine what year the tie or section of track was laid.
Not to be confused with railroad spikes which are much larger, railroad
nails were custom made and used for identification purposes only.
The number on the face corresponds to the year the nail was cast, in this case
1930. In the 1960's, better record keeping and tie stamping methods
made railroad nails obsolete.
Railroad nail cufflinks are one piece, individually milled using only the
nail. No other parts are used. The point has been sheared off,
but the unique
features of the nail remain intact. Recovered from decades of service,
each nail head leaves behind the distinct hallmark of being struck
with a
sledgehammer! Your choice of year, 1930 through 1969. Nail heads measure approximately
